DMC and NP Aerospace Collaborate to Enhance UK Defence Supply Chain with Additive Manufacturing

The Digital Manufacturing Centre (DMC), a leading innovator in additive manufacturing, has partnered with NP Aerospace to deliver advanced metal engineering solutions to the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) under Project TAMPA. Sponsored by UK Strategic Command Defence Support, this initiative aims to leverage the benefits of 3D printing to enhance the speed, quality, and flexibility of the UK’s defence supply chain.

NP Aerospace, known for its extensive experience in providing military vehicles and support services, has been a long-term partner of the MoD. In 2019, the company secured the PMETS contract to maintain the UK’s fleet of protected vehicles, further expanding its role in defence with its involvement in the £850 million Marine Systems Transformation program.

Through their collaboration, DMC and NP Aerospace are addressing complex defence challenges using additive manufacturing. This approach allows for the rapid production of polymer and metal components for key platforms like the Mastiff and Ridgback vehicles. Essential parts, such as the rear step assembly and door latch, have been swiftly manufactured using 3D printing to meet operational needs. These components will be displayed on the Ridgback vehicle at the upcoming DVD exhibition in Millbrook.

DMC’s expertise in additive manufacturing, coupled with adherence to stringent standards like AS9100 certification and the Part Production Approval Process (PPAP), enables the company to push the boundaries of 3D printing for defence applications. The partnership is also exploring future opportunities, such as the secure transfer of digital files to deployed 3D printing facilities, which could significantly reduce delivery times for critical parts.

David Wilson, Director of Engineering at NP Aerospace, emphasized that Project TAMPA has provided a platform to explore the full potential of additive manufacturing. In collaboration with DMC, the companies have solved complex engineering challenges while maintaining the high standards of quality and reliability required in the defence sector.

Kieron Salter, CEO of DMC, expressed pride in supporting NP Aerospace and the wider UK defence industry. Drawing from experience in sectors such as Formula 1 and aerospace, Salter noted that DMC’s innovative approach focuses on creative engineering solutions that transcend traditional manufacturing methods, leading to cutting-edge production outcomes.
