The LEGO Group has announced the release of its first-ever mass-produced 3D printed component, which will be included in the new LEGO Icons Holiday Express Train set. The piece, a functional train, is a significant step for the company in its adoption of additive manufacturing for large-scale production.
The 3D printed train is one of 956 pieces in the set and features a unique internal functionality that is only achievable through 3D printing, combined with standard LEGO connectors. The train is produced using an EOS 3D printer with Fine Detail Resolution (FDR) technology, which utilizes a fine CO laser to create high-precision, detailed parts that meet LEGO’s stringent quality and safety standards.
This is not the first time LEGO has experimented with 3D printing. In 2022, the company produced a 3D printed duck as a gift for attendees at a LEGO House fan event. However, the new train piece is the first to be included in a commercially available set for the general public.
The LEGO Icons Holiday Express Train set, which includes a 16-piece circular track, is designed as a festive centerpiece and can even be motorized with the LEGO Powered Up kit. The set will be available to LEGO Insiders on October 1, 2025, with a general release on October 4, 2025.
