axial3D, a UK-based medical 3D printing company is partnering with the University Hospital Basel in Switzerland to deliver advanced 3D printing solutions for improved patient care. Through the collaboration, the Swiss hospital will integrate axial3D’s cloud-based platform, axial3Dassure, into its 3D printing lab to improve its medical AM capabilities.

At the hospital, axial3Dassure will be used to manage over 20 desktop and industrial 3D printers, ensuring quality control, good communication, tracking and workflow. The point-of-care 3D printing software will ultimately enable the hospital to ramp up its productivity and efficiency, helping to produce and deliver patient specific surgical guides at faster rates.

According to Philipp Brantner, Senior Physician Radiology and Co-Director of the 3D Print Lab at the hospital, the lab will initially focus on 3D printing surgical guides for the Department of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery, where the use of 3D printing is becoming increasingly commonplace.

“Having access to onsite printing has revolutionised how we treat those patients, some who arrive with life-threatening injuries that require immediate action,” Brantner explained. “The functionality that we now get provided will allow us to speed up production and treat patients more effectively and efficiently.”

In addition to 3D printing cranio-maxillofacial surgical guides, the University Hospital Basel will also leverage axial3D’s technology to plan out and generate 3D printable orthopaedic models. The platform’s orthopaedic auto-segmentation software model helps to reduce the pre-production and planning stages for orthopaedic models.

“We are very excited to be working with the team at University Hospital Basel,” said Daniel Crawford, CEO and Founder at axial3D. “They are a leading force in medical 3D printing, not just in Europe, but globally, and this alliance will ensure the expertise they have developed can support our company’s growth by informing the ongoing development of axial3D’s software solutions.

“With a growing requirement for 3D printing within healthcare, a centralised management platform is necessary for any 3D print lab, which plans to scale and grow in the coming years. University Hospital Basel has taken strides in its commitment to improving outcomes for patients through technology advances in the form of this collaboration.”

With the integration of axial3D’s software platform, University Hospital Basel will have the necessary tools to better understand the value of additive manufacturing for patient care. This is thanks to statistics and figures provided by the software, as well as its workflow management capabilities.

axial3D was founded in 2015 and has played a key role in the proliferation and advancement of patient specific 3D printed medical models. The company’s main goal and mission are to improve the quality of patient care through bespoke 3D printed models.
