Incus, founded by Dr. Gerald Mitteramskogler offers a unique Lithography-based Metal Manufacturing (LMM) to produce small and micro parts
In a Nutshell
An innovation that is sure to revolutionize small and mid-scale production, Lithography-based Metal Manufacturing (LMM), has truly a lot of potential waiting to be explored. Incus, a start-up founded at the end of 2019, uses this unique metal additive manufacturing technology to reduce production costs and time significantly. Despite the challenges, the company shipped the first flagship 3D printing solution, the Hammer Lab35, in March 2020 and acquired new partners in Europe and Asia throughout the year. In 2021, Incus entered serial production with plans to scale up to mass-production. Within the last two years, the team increased from 6 to 20 experts from all over the world. Incus production facilities in the Technology Centre Seestadt, the newest innovative hub in Vienna, have recently doubled in capacity.
LMM technology combines, for the first time in metal additive manufacturing, feature resolution, surface aesthetics, mechanical properties, and economic efficiency. The goal is to enable new possibilities for 3D printing of metal materials and help manufacturers bring the best product to the market, faster and more efficiently.
Brains behind this
The brain behind this start-up is Dr. Gerald Mitteramskogler, a true innovator at heart. Dr. Gerald Mitteramskogler has completed his Ph.D. from the Technical University of Wien, Germany. He is a passionate mechanical engineer who has extensive experience in additive manufacturing of metals and ceramics. He started Incus GmbH with an aim to manufacture high qualify industrial metal additive manufacturing machines, which have features such as low cost, reproducibility, and improved manufacturing speed. His aim is to make Incus GmbH a key player in the area of metal additive manufacturing.
The Before and The After
Established in the middle of the pandemic, like all other start-ups facing challenges and issues, Incus also faced the brunt of supply chain challenges etc. Already established MIM technology, as well as increasing competition from emerging additive manufacturing technologies, posed a challenge for market penetration. But the combination of a strong team and early involvement of key customers and stakeholders in the project, as well as a strong commercialization strategy helped to establish the LMM technology in the market, ahead of the competition while maintaining a sufficient development lead.
Technology:
The unique LMM technology allows small and micro unique parts to be produced economically with highest precision in low to medium quantities (<10.000 parts/ year). Produced parts have great surface quality without post processing, that fulfil all specifications in terms of precision, tolerances and material properties, critical in luxury industries. LMM technology is also the perfect solution for thin-walled structures (less than 1mm) and high-resolution elements in Micro Mechanics applications, offering maximum freedom of design. Incus enables companies to produce complex green parts in Metal Injection Moulding size range of highest resolution and superb surface aesthetics for metal additive manufacturing. It provides wide range of materials including non-flowable and non-weldable materials metals. Incus LMM technology is a production process of easy preparation of printing jobs, quick exchange of materials, safe working environment with no metal dust or high-power laser.

Along with the technological innovations, it is important for start-ups to understand how their innovation is addressing the world’s biggest Environmental, Social and Governance Challenges. AM Ventures, our co-collaborator for this AM start-up series, poses a question to Incus on their contribution to the world’s biggest ESG challenges.
Incus supports the European businesses by bringing supply-chains back to Europe, creating a need for highly skilled personnel which will encourage investing in skills and education and embracing digital transformation. Additive Manufacturing is a key technology within the context of digitalization and Industry 4.0. With individualized production gaining importance, this innovation will go a long way in supporting this trend.
The LMM technology contributes to building a climate-neutral, fair and social Europe by adding to green initiatives by a recycling rate of its feedstock of 90% minimum. Additive Manufacturing technologies in general reduce waste and downtime periods. The Company supports multiple SDG: production according to Austria’s high social and ecological standards, gender equality and equal pay and long-term resource savings for Incus clients like prototyping in-house instead of buying metal injection moulds from overseas involving several adjustment loops that include costs and downtimes.
Funding Facts
In 2019-2021, the engineering team participated in the PRIMUS project by Vienna Business Agency and developed a new 3D-printing concept with a high-performance exposure system, allowing a new class of feedstock with finer metal powders. In 2020, Incus was one of the Top Start Ups of BoostUp Competition organized by the EIT – European Institute of Innovation and Technology. In 2021, Incus partnered with the European Space Agency (ESA), OHB System AG and Lithoz GmbH in a joint project to develop and test 3D printing in a micro-gravity environment. The goal of the 18-month project is to assess the feasibility of processing scrap metals available on the Moon’s surface to produce a high-quality final product via a zero-waste process. At the end of 2021, Incus closed a Series A investment also including existing investor AM Ventures. The company brought onboard industry veteran Adrian Keppler, former CEO of world market leader in Powder Bed Fusion systems EOS GmbH, as an investor and growth consultant.
