Singapore’s Green Additive Manufacturing Capabilities Poised to Elevate With New Public-Private Partnerships

The 12th Global Additive Manufacturing Summit (GAMS) kicked off this morning, with Mr Alvin Tan, Minister of State, Ministry of Trade and Industry, as Guest-of-Honour. The annual summit marks the final event of the Singapore Additive Manufacturing Week organised by the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Cluster (NAMIC), convening more than 800 in-person and virtual global delegates.

Global thought leaders exchanged ideas on how additive manufacturing enables sustainability and supply chain resilience in industries such as cellular agriculture, urban solutions, renewables, and environmental sustainability. An exhibition was also held alongside the summit, showcasing AM technologies from 10 industry players.

At GAMS, Minister of State Alvin Tan launched Pelagus 3D- a Joint Venture between Thyssenkrupp and Wilhelmsen, and witnessed the inking of several public-private partnerships that will elevate Singapore’s green additive manufacturing capabilities.

These collaborations will create platforms for industry tests and implementation, and catalyse new business growth and business models for AM companies. It will also help to accelerate the standards and certification of additive manufacturing and expand the AM ecosystem.

“NAMIC has played a pivotal role in building out the additive manufacturing ecosystem since its inception, positioning Singapore as one of the leading international additive manufacturing hubs. Leveraging on the deep multi-disciplinary research talent pool in our Institutes of higher learning and research institutes, NAMIC has orchestrated the translation and pull-through of promising research into industry-needed additive manufacturing technological solutions in several sectors. NAMIC has also invested in nurturing the deep-tech and AM startup community, facilitating investor connections and co-creating innovations in products, advanced materials and platform solutions such as bioprinting and robotic additive manufacturing systems. Through our open innovation platform, several long-standing public-private partnerships have been forged to help our companies pivot towards high value-added business activities in product design and innovation, and cradle-to-cradle with additive manufacturing adoption. Moving forward, NAMIC will continue to address the industrial scale-up adoption challenges including standards and regulatory, as well as developing a strong pool of STEM-based talents with design thinking,” said Dr Ho Chaw Sing, Chief Executive Officer of NAMIC.

The Singapore AM Week, held from 25 to 29 September 2023, consisted of seven co-organised industry-led design for additive manufacturing workshops and tours hosted by HP, Dassault Systemes, Autodesk, Formlabs, i-Vtech Solutions, Hyperganic GmBH, Hexagon, and Proterial; NAMIC’s annual Start-up Innovation Forum and NAMIC’s Global Additive Manufacturing Summit (GAMS) 2023. The Singapore AM Week was also held in conjunction with the 1KG Challenge Exhibition, where participants each developed a 1kg 3D printable sustainable design model and the finalists’ models were showcased. The 1KG Challenge Exhibition is co-organised with Japan-based ExtraBold, as part of the Singapore Design Week 2023. For more information, visit https://namic.sg/1kg-challenge/.

About National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Cluster (NAMIC)
The National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Cluster (NAMIC) is a national platform led by the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), supported by the National Research Foundation under the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of Trade and Industry, together with Enterprise Singapore and the Singapore Economic Development Board. NAMIC aims to accelerate the adoption of hybrid and digital additive manufacturing technologies under Singapore’s Manufacturing and Economy 2030 Vision, helping industries transform towards innovation and high value-added manufacturing using sustainably sourced, nature-based designs and cradle-to-cradle on-demand manufacturing. NAMIC achieves this by focusing on value capture and creation through an industry sectorial engagement approach, leveraging on public-private partnerships and R&D investments, supporting translational research, and accelerating industry test-bedding towards commercial scale-up. NAMIC continues to grow its international outreach, identifying and supporting deep-tech companies incorporating AM technologies seeking capital injection either through project joint-funding or its investor networks.
