OPM to Utilize the Jajal Digital Planning Platform to Supply Patient-Specific OsteoFab® Implants; Initial Cases in Process for War Casualties in Ukraine

Oxford Performance Materials, Inc. (OPM; https://oxfordpm.com/), an industry leader in advanced polymer science, coating technologies, and 3D-printed biomedical devices, and Jajal Medical, a leader in 3D visualization and digital planning, are collaborating to deliver a fully integrated solution for patients with major bone defects requiring customized orthopedic implants. This new partnership combines Jajal’s 3D Surgical® digital planning platform with OPM’s 3D printing OsteoFab® PEKK technology to address a growing, unmet need for patient-specific high performance polymer implants, worldwide. The initial application for these combined technologies will address war trauma cases in Ukraine over the coming weeks.

Large segmental defects result from musculoskeletal tumors, infections, and trauma; since each instance is unique, surgeons require implants designed & manufactured on a case-by-case basis. OPM is a pioneer in this area, first delivering patient-specific craniomaxillofacial (CMF) implants in 2013 with the launch of its OsteoFab PEKK implant technology. Jajal’s 3D visualization & digital planning software suite is an ideal platform for design of complex surgical cases, and Jajal’s expert team will be managing the design function for these custom 3D printed implant cases.
“This unique partnership with Jajal Medical creates an end-to-end solution that is unparalleled in today’s orthopedic landscape,” said OPM CEO Scott DeFelice. “OPM has identified a clear market need for custom critical bone defects in the U.S. and abroad that are not supported – economically or clinically – at this time. By marrying Jajal’s design capabilities with OPM’s patented PEKK material science and 3D printing technology, we will offer solutions that improve clinical outcomes at lower overall cost.”

CEO Ketan Jajal responded: “We originally developed the 3D Surgical digital planning platform with partners like OPM in mind. Each custom orthopedic implant case is, in effect, a partnership between the surgeon, the design team and the manufacturer. The 3D Surgical platform fully streamlines communication, workflow, and makes customization scalable. When combined with OPM’s metal-free material technology – which is osseointegrative and antibacterial with proven mechanical performance – we hope together to offer a “best of” solution for today’s global market.”

In September, OPM announced a major effort to support OHFU, a Ukranian non-profit aiding bone trauma war casualty cases. The first step in the OPM-Jajal partnership will contribute to these efforts in Ukraine. Specifically, OPM has signed a custom manufacturing agreement with a Ukrainian healthcare organization. Jajal is designing large bone defect implants for the cases that will be manufactured by OPM and shipped directly to the Ukrainian surgeons. From there, the OPM – Jajal partnership will be teaming up with OEMs toward regulatory clearances and distribution to hospitals and surgeons treating major bone defect cases throughout the world.
