Petrobras has inaugurated LABi3D, a cutting-edge additive manufacturing (AM) laboratory at its Research Center (CENPES) in Rio de Janeiro. The facility, developed in partnership with 3DCRIAR, positions Petrobras at the forefront of digital transformation in the oil and gas sector. LABi3D specializes in polymeric AM and aims to enhance logistical independence and optimize critical processes, solidifying its status as one of the most advanced AM hubs in Latin America.
The 3D as a Service® Model
Chosen from 16 contenders, 3DCRIAR has implemented its innovative 3D as a Service® (3DaaS®) model to operate LABi3D. This comprehensive outsourcing solution encompasses technical consulting, on-site expertise, and integrated management, going beyond equipment procurement to ensure Petrobras achieves peak operational efficiency.
“Being selected from so many proposals underscores our dedication to innovation and results-driven solutions in complex sectors,” said Daniel Huamani, CTO of 3DCRIAR.
Global Tech Partnerships
LABi3D leverages strategic collaborations with global leaders such as Siemens, UltiMaker, Formlabs, miniFactory, and Peel 3D, bringing world-class technologies to the facility. Thiago Ribeiro, Head of Open Innovation at Siemens, highlighted how the integration of Siemens’ digital solutions and 3DCRIAR’s platforms makes LABi3D a comprehensive smart manufacturing hub:
“With digital twins and simulation tools, LABi3D enhances efficiency, benefiting not just Petrobras but the broader ecosystem reliant on Brazil’s largest company.”
Advanced AM Technologies
LABi3D’s state-of-the-art equipment includes:
- UltiMaker Factor 4: Producing intricate, high-complexity parts.
- Formlabs Fuse 1+ (SLS technology): Delivering highly durable components for demanding applications.
- Formlabs Form 3L: Creating high-resolution, detailed parts for critical use cases.
- miniFactory Ultra 2: Leveraging high-performance polymers like PEEK, essential for harsh environments such as oil and gas operations.
Shaping the Future of AM in Brazil
LABi3D symbolizes a pivotal step towards digitized, adaptable manufacturing for the oil and gas industry. By leveraging additive manufacturing, Petrobras is pursuing faster production cycles and enhanced logistical autonomy.
Filipe Martins, Head of the Additive Manufacturing Excellence Center at Petrobras, stated:
“Our partnership with 3DCRIAR aligns perfectly with our strategy. LABi3D aims to revolutionize internal processes, providing Petrobras with greater independence and transforming how we approach manufacturing.”
A Model of Collaboration and Innovation
The launch of LABi3D sets a benchmark for how partnerships between industry leaders and technology innovators can drive sustainable development. By collaborating with companies like Siemens and Formlabs, Petrobras underscores that innovation and strategic alliances are key to maintaining leadership and achieving operational excellence.
LABi3D not only enhances Petrobras’ capabilities but also serves as an inspiring example for industries across Brazil, demonstrating the transformative potential of additive manufacturing in reshaping processes and fostering digital transformation. This milestone marks a new chapter for Petrobras and 3DCRIAR, solidifying Brazil’s leadership in AM within the global oil and gas sector.
