UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Penn State Center for Innovative Materials Processing through Direct Digital Deposition (CIMP-3D) is now accepting registrations online for a three-day additive manufacturing (AM) practicum aimed at industry members and academics, including Penn State students, postdoctoral scholars and faculty.
The workshop will begin on Tuesday, July 30, and run through Thursday, Aug. 1, at the CIMP-3D Additive Manufacturing Demonstration Facility, located in the Guion S. Bluford Jr. Building at Innovation Park.
Daily programming will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Each morning, participants will have the opportunity to learn best practices from the AM industry’s top researchers and members. The afternoon will include demonstrations and hands-on metal AM fabrication practicums using state-of-the-art technologies relevant for industrial applications, such as laser powder bed fusion and directed energy deposition.
Participants will have the chance to become familiar with all aspects of engineered AM components, including metallic material systems, design and optimization tools, process modeling, simulation and sensing, and computer tomography inspection and qualification techniques for metal AM. Additionally, participants will take part in two industry-led case studies presented by a leading aerospace company and a leading energy company.
The $3,000 cost for the workshop will cover course materials, supplies for hands-on experiments, lunch, and morning and afternoon snacks.

Bashore Faculty Development Professor in Mechanical Engineering and co-director of CIMP-3D. “Participants will learn from the best in the business. They’ll walk away with a knowledge base of best practices in AM and cutting-edge research methods that will set them apart from their industry or research and development peers.”
