US-based Optomec – a leading global supplier of production-grade additive manufacturing systems for 3D printed metals, has launched two new LENS CS 600 and CS 800 Controlled Atmosphere (CA) DED Systems.

Part of the company’s Optomec Laser Engineered Net Shaping (LENS) Classic System Series, the new systems are configurable and maximize the process build envelope with a minimal system footprint.

The LENS CS 600 and CS 800 feature controlled atmosphere chambers enabling for processing of both reactive and non-reactive metals in an atmosphere that keeps oxygen and moisture levels at less than 10 ppm. These systems come standard with the powerful Siemens 840D controller which allows for sophisticated and smooth 3D printing from three axis up to simultaneous five axis motion.

optomec lens cs 800“These new systems come packed with next-generation DED components all born from signature Optomec know-how and built to provide affordable, high-quality metal additive manufacturing capabilities for industry’s most demanding requirements,” said Tom Cobbs, Optomec LENS product manager.   “The LENS CS 600 and CS 800 systems represent the latest in DED processing from precision deposition to cladding applications and extend our product portfolio to continue to provide high-value metal additive manufacturing solutions.”

These systems provide interchangeable print nozzles, higher power laser processing (up to 3 kW), and variable spot sizes, thanks to the Optomec’s latest generation LENS deposition head.

Optomec LENS systems use an additive manufacturing technique called directed energy deposition (DED), where high-powered lasers build structures layer by layer directly from powdered metals, alloys, ceramics, or composites to produce fully-dense parts with excellent mechanical and fatigue properties.

The base LENS machines are integrated with a linear three axis motion system, but optionally can be delivered with a user interchangeable rotary table and/or tilt-rotate trunnion for four and five axis operations.

The Siemens motion controller provides an easy-to-use push button HMI and utilizes industry standard G&M codes to drive the system. Optional material starter recipes, closed loop process controls, thermal imaging, five axis tool path generation software, and unparalleled customer service round out the LENS CS 600 and CS 800 systems.

All classic series systems incorporate Optomec industry-leading LENS 3D Metal Printing technology, which has been enhanced for higher power and faster additive manufacturing. One unique advantage of LENS is that it is able to add metal to existing parts for repair and coating applications that extend the useful life of components without the need to re-fixture or align the component on a second machine. The LENS CS 600 and CS 800 systems continue to lead the industry in cost to performance ratio.
