DEEP is building subsea human habitats and requires large, customized metal component parts at unprecedented scale. Traditional manufacturing processes were inadequate, leading to the strategic investment in Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM). This advanced technology enables DEEP Manufacturing to meet the scale and speed necessary for their groundbreaking projects, driving innovation in the field.
DEEP Manufacturing is dedicated to accelerating the deployment of large-scale metal component parts. Initially focused on underwater pressure vessels, the business is equipped to extend its services to other sectors, including offshore, maritime, energy, and aviation. This versatility positions DEEP Manufacturing as a key player in meeting the growing demand for high-quality metal parts at rapid turnaround times.
WAAM Technology at DEEP Manufacturing
With 20 Wire Arc systems at their Advanced Manufacturing Centre of Excellence in Avonmouth, UK, DEEP Manufacturing is establishing one of the largest concentrations of WAAM systems in Europe. This facility is poised to enhance DEEP’s capabilities in large-scale additive manufacturing, positioning the company at the forefront of technological advancement.
Each robotic system can produce metallic parts up to three meters in diameter. After extensive research and investment, DEEP Manufacturing is capable of synchronizing six multi-arm systems, allowing for the production of parts with volumes up to 6.1 meters in diameter and 3.2 meters in height. This synchronization boosts efficiency and precision in manufacturing processes.
The strategic infrastructure investment aligns with an expansion of the workforce at the Avonmouth site, creating new roles across engineering, production, and quality assurance. By fostering a skilled workforce, DEEP Manufacturing aims to enhance its operational capabilities while contributing to local job growth.
Louise Slade, COO, stated: “We’re excited about the future of DEEP Manufacturing. This initiative allows us to enhance our advanced manufacturing capabilities, driving innovation through automation. We believe this will create significant value for our business and employees, and contribute to global advancements in manufacturing technology.”
To support its growth strategy, DEEP Manufacturing has appointed new CEO Peter Richards, who brings over 25 years of experience in manufacturing and leadership. His objectives will include scaling operations and raising awareness of DEEP’s unique offerings in competitive markets.
Richards commented: “DEEP Manufacturing is uniquely positioned to transform metal component production. I’m enthusiastic about leading the team in expanding our reach across industries. Our innovative capabilities and technical expertise will play a critical role in enhancing the UK’s manufacturing landscape.”
