Mount Maunganui has unveiled its new Destination Skatepark, featuring a range of 3D printed skateable elements, including “The Wave,” which is the largest known 3D printed skate sculpture in the world. The Wave is nearly 12 meters long and 3 meters high, composed of seven segments, and took approximately five hours to print. This innovative feature was designed to mimic the feel of curling water, providing a unique aesthetic and functional element for skaters.
The skatepark was a collaboration between Tauranga City Council, RICH Landscapes, and Hamilton-based Qorox, New Zealand’s only 3D print construction company. The project emphasizes sustainable technologies, using Qorox’s Q-Ink, a low-carbon material that is 20% lighter and emits 30% fewer emissions than traditional concrete. Other 3D printed features in the park include a quarterpipe and skateable ledges, catering to intermediate and advanced skaters.
This development addresses the community’s demand for more advanced skating facilities and reflects a growing interest in using cutting-edge technology for sustainable urban development. The park, located at the corner of Hull Road and Maunganui Road, also features a flow bowl, surf/skate ditch, competition stairs, and a street skate area, promising to keep both local and visiting skaters engaged for years to come (Tauranga City Council) (SunLive).
