Korean 3D Printed Airless Bike Tire with Lattice Structure

Currently, frequent attempts are being made to develop industrial and practical products by utilizing 3D printing technology. Korea’s first Airless Bike Tire applying 3D printing and DfAM technology at the same time was announced in August 2018 in partnership with K-AMUG. It has attracted interest by mounting it on a trial bike.

The airless bike tire was printed with a 3D printer with flexible TPU material and applying the Lattice pattern structure of DfAM by using Materialise software.

Professor Yi Chang Kyoo announced that 17% weight reduction results were effective to compare with the same model tire as the following table (1).

Professor Yi Chang Kyoo of the Hanseo University led the production of the above project. Team members Lee Seok-hyun, Park Yoo-jin (Graduate School of Design Convergence, Hanseo University, Ph.D.) and Jung Sung-ho (Metal Printing Work, President who was a senior Engineer)  supported this project. K-AMUG provide the necessary consulting to develop this project.  Also,They participated in the 2nd DfAM challenge of K-AMUG (Korean Additive Manufacturing User Group, Chairman Willaim SH Joo) and won the prize at the challenge.

The Airless Bike Tire will be display at Techfesta 3D printing expo at Ulsan city on September 13-15, 2018.

About K-AMUG

K-AMUG is Korea-Additive Manufacturing User Group established for 3D printing technological development and network deployment by integrating local automobile, shipbuilding and energy components manufacturing industries in a new paradigm of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. We develop 3D printing materials, equipment, manufacturing processes and service-related technologies, and engage in human exchanges and discovering industrial business models as the centerpiece of the 3D printing industry, the core business of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. AMUG, active within the United States, is a group of additive manufacturing engineers evolving and interacting with technology consumers in a wide range of industries including auto, aviation, defense industries through exhibitions and conferences. In line with this trend, K-AMUG was established in Korea as the necessity of cooperation between additive manufacturing engineers and consumers had increased and the necessity of industrial development had been continuously raised. The Ulsan-based association was chaired by Professor Seunghwan Joo and participated by domestic 3D printing enterprises, KITECH(Korea Institute of Industrial Technology) and KICET(Korea Institute of Ceramic Engineering and Technology).
