VOiLA3D, an organization in the field of Robotic Additive Manufacturing and Circular Economy, announced the launch of India’s First Large Format Chess Set 3D Printed using post-consumer recycled plastics. The first installation has been embraced by a Tech Giant at a Technology Park in Bengaluru.

The fact that the large chess pieces are made sustainably from end-of-life waste plastics makes this one of its kind in the world, a testament to the UN Sustainable Development Goals of Responsible Consumption & Production, and Climate Change.

“We are delighted to introduce Large Format Chess Set, 3D Printed in post-consumer waste plastics” said Siva Reddy A.V., CMD of VOiLA3D. “Most probably one of its kind in the world, we believe this Chess Set will be a testament to our mission of repurposing post-consumer waste plastics into meaningful products, through Robotic 3D Printing Technology.”

The black chess pieces were 3D Printed in Polypropylene sourced from end-of-life battery containers. Discarded food containers were repurposed to 3D Print the Beige Chess Pieces. The average print duration per chess piece was 3.5 hours with the King being the tallest at an impressive 1.08 meter height, weighing 4 Kgs. The entire chess set aligns with circular economy principles, being capable of recycled in the future to be repurposed as any other meaningful products using Large Scale Robotic 3D Printing Technology.

“Through our Robotic Additive Manufacturing Software AdaOne, we are proud to be a part of this Large Format Chess Set sustainably 3D Printed from recycled plastics by VOiLA. This signifies the unlimited possibilities of upcycling waste plastics into meaningful products, on-demand and locally with Large Scale Robotic 3D Printing Technology” added Henri Bernard, CEO, ADAXIS, France

Why 3D Printed Chess by VOiLA3D?

Chess, a game of strategy with a history spanning nearly 1,500 years, remains evergreen and is one of the fastest-growing sports worldwide. Team VOiLA envisioned creating a large-format chess set from recycled plastics to draw attention to the significant challenges posed by climate change crisis to the environment and humanity. This initiative underscores the urgent need for effective strategies and solutions to collect, sort and repurpose post-consumer waste plastics at scale.

This initiative by VOiLA also aligns with principals of Sustainable 3D printing. Sustainable 3D printing is vital due to its potential to significantly reduce waste by using only the necessary material. It conserves resources through the use of recycled or bio-based filaments, lowers energy consumption compared to traditional manufacturing, and supports local production, decreasing transportation-related emissions. Additionally, sustainable 3D printing aligns with the circular economy by promoting material reuse and recycling, while also driving innovation in environmentally friendly materials and processes.

These Large Format Chess Sets made out of generic/ corporate specific post-consumer waste plastics are ideal for ‘Entertainment For a Cause’ by promoting the message of recycling & sustainability  at Tech Parks, Corporate Events, Shopping Malls, Co-working spaces, Resorts and Universities.

The VOiLA Large Format Chess Set 3D Printed from Post-Consumer Recycled Plastics is a cornerstone for raising awareness about the escalating issues of carbon emissions and waste accumulation in landfills and oceans.”   added Dr.Suryasarathi Bose, Professor, Dept. of Materials Engineering, IISc. and Director – Upcycling & Recycling Technologies, VOiLA3D

We firmly believe that the VOiLA Large Format Chess Set made by repurposing post-consumer waste plastics through Large Scale Robotic 3D Printing Technology  will exemplify to the Society the unlimited possibilities of efficiently repurposing end-of-life waste plastics into meaningful products, on-demand and locally, all of which are integral to collectively building a low carbon economy.
