TechEmerge Resilience India Challenge Announcement

The World Bank Group is pleased to announce the TechEmerge Resilience India Challenge, in partnership with Government of India’s National Disaster Management Authority and CES. Looking for innovative technologies to meet urgent disaster management needs amidst COVID-19 in India.
Now inviting applications for solutions under 2 tracks: Disaster Management during COVID-19 Pandemic and Resilience to Climate Change and Disasters.

COVID-19 has brought upon dual shocks to the communities in India, especially the most vulnerable with the recent Cyclones Amphan and Nisarga, and the upcoming monsoon season. Frontline workers and disaster agencies are already battling the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 outbreak has overwhelmed frontline workers and existing disaster management resources.

To deal with the twin challenges of immediate disaster response in the time of COVID-19 and building longer term disaster and climate resilience, the TechEmerge Resilience India Challenge is inviting applications for solutions using emerging or disruptive technologies such as AI, IoT, Drones, 3D printing, digital platforms and more.

Disaster Management during COVID-19 Pandemic: deadline June 19, 2020

The need for adaptation and innovation is urgent to support India’s national, state and district Disaster Management Authorities (DMAs) in preparing for, and responding to disasters while also conforming to the precautionary measures required to limit the spread of the novel coronavirus.

What’s the Criteria for the COVID-19 Fast Track ?

Proven, well-tested product, with at least some commercial installations  Ready to deploy in India by early July 2020
If the firm is based outside India, a local partner is desirable
Demonstrated managerial capacity and scalability
Ability to immediately allocate time & resources to participate in project and deploy solutions in India Meets the needs of Indian Disaster Management Authorities to deal with the imminent disasters in the current COVID-19 context.

Resilience to Climate Change and Disasters: deadline June 20, 2020

Although India has made remarkable progress in saving lives through proactive disaster preparedness and risk reduction, the country is also looking at building greater resilience of its communities and infrastructure to extreme events.

What’s the Criteria for the Resilience Fast Track ?

Prototype stage or proven product
If the firm is based outside India, a local partner is desirable
Ready to deploy in India by November 2020
Ability to allocate time and resources to participate in project and deploy solutions in India
Meets the needs of Indian Disaster Management Authorities to strengthen mitigation, management and analytics focused on building resilience to natural disasters and climate change

Why Apply ?

Be invited to present solutions to participating Indian Disaster Management Authorities
Access to a pool of up to US $1 million in grant funding, supported by UK’s DFID, to pilot and deploy solutions in India (competitive selection). Guidance during pilot implementation and developing market entry/scaling  strategies. Showcase solution at CES2021, world’s largest technology event, to be held in Las Vegas in January, 2021 (top 5 only)  Potential for further investment to commercialise /scale solutions. Be part of “Tech Investments for Good,” a growing tech community that aims to respond to similar resilience challenges in other World Bank Group projects.

What is the Selection Process ?

Select: With the support of a network of expert jury members, we select high-performing technologies that can meet the needs of Disaster Management Authorities.

COVID-19 Fast Track: shortlisted tech companies with proven, ready to deploy solutions will be directly matched with interested Indian Disaster Management Authorities by mid-July.

Resilience Track: : shortlisted tech companies will attend a pitch bootcamp, followed by attending a virtual event to meet Indian Disaster Management Authorities to pitch and present their solutions, and discuss working together in pilot projects.

Pilot: Where there is interest from Disaster Management Authorities, tech companies will be invited to partner to pilot their solutions in the respective Indian States, with the chance for commercialization of successful pilots.
