Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital inaugurated a Medical 3D printing laboratory, ushering in a new era of high-precision surgeries, the hospital informed in a press release on Friday. This facility, intricately connected with Oncology, is designed to deliver precision in oncologic, reconstructive orthopaedic, and specialised dentistry surgeries.
Led by Dr Manish Agarwal, Director of Surgical Oncology (Orthopaedic) at Nanavati Max Institute of Cancer Care, the 3D printing laboratory boasts two 3D printers. These printers have the capability to produce detailed bone models, offering a comprehensive understanding of intricate anatomy or pathology. Moreover, the facility generates surgical cutting guides, a crucial aid in meticulously planning and executing bone cancer surgeries.
Dr Agarwal expressed the significance of the in-house lab, equipped with advanced tools and a proficient bioengineering team. The lab facilitates the swift production of bone models and cutting guides, reducing the turnaround time from two weeks to a remarkable 24 to 48 hours. This accelerated pace is not only advantageous in terms of speed but also cost-effective for patients undergoing cancer treatment, where time is of the essence.
The use of open-source software and in-house resources contributes to the affordability of this advanced technology, ensuring enhanced patient accessibility and care.
The process involves creating virtual 3D bone models from CT scans, which are then translated into physical models and surgical cutting guides by the 3D printers with unparalleled accuracy. While bone models aid in surgical planning, the cutting guides precisely fit on the patient’s bone, providing surgeons with guidance for precise excisions.
Mangla Dembi, Senior Vice President and Head of Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital, expressed pride in the hospital’s commitment to staying at the forefront of technology for superior clinical outcomes. The introduction of the 3D printing facility represents Nanavati Max’s dedication to offering accessible and affordable technology for precision surgery.
This integration of cutting-edge technology with clinical excellence extends its benefits across various domains, including general orthopaedic, maxillofacial, and plastic surgeries, revolutionising healthcare in unprecedented ways.
