nScrypt’s FiT Platform Takes Additive Manufacturing to the Extreme with Austere nField Repair Project

nScrypt, Orlando based manufacturer of the Factory in a Tool (FiT) series of high-precision motion platforms for 3D manufacturing, was one of six winners of the Department of Defense Manufacturing Technology (DOD ManTech) “Point of Need Challenge”. The challenge sought solutions to support forward-deployed forces in austere environments, both extreme arctic-type and hot, humid conditions.

nScrypt’s unique ability to 3D print and manufacture at extreme temperatures of negative 40 degrees ensured their winning project, Austere nField Repair. The project will use the nRugged™ tool, the ruggedized platform from the FiT line. The project will employ additive electronics and mechanical part manufacturing to replace and repair damaged hardware at austere points of need. Four stages of functionality will be demonstrated: Fabricating a replacement electronic printed circuit board; Repairing a damaged printed circuit board; 3D printing a replacement mechanical part; and Manufacturing a customized biomedical brace.

Ken Church, nScrypt’s CEO, said, “nScrypt’s nRugged ™ 3D manufacturing system was developed for environments such as this. The Point of Need Challenge was the perfect opportunity to demonstrate its capabilities. Not only can the nRugged™ make an entire new printed circuit board and repair a damaged one, and make mechanical parts, in one build, in one machine, but it can do all of that in harsh environments.”

The event featured 11 presentations, selected from 63 concept papers, which were submitted by member companies of the DoD’s Manufacturing Innovation Institutes (MIIs) and reviewed by 72 DoD reviewers. A panel of 12 judges from the Military Services, Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), Defense Innovation Unit, Department of Defense Manufacturing Technology (OSD ManTech), and Joint Staff recommended six projects from five MIIs. nScrypt will be working through NextFlex, an MII based out of San Jose, CA.

OSD ManTech will invest nearly $2.5 million in the winning projects and industry partners will contribute nearly $700,000 in cost share. Follow-on demonstrations of the winning projects are planned for November 2023 in a simulated cold weather environment, supported by the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM).

nScrypt designs and manufactures award-winning, next-generation, high-precision microdispensing, 3D Manufacturing equipment and provides solutions for industrial applications with unmatched accuracy and flexibility. Serving the printed electronics, electronics packaging, communications, printed antenna, chemical/pharmaceutical, defense, space, and 3D printing industries, our systems are widely used in the military, at academic and research institutes, within government agencies and national labs, and in private industry.

Our line of 3D manufacturing systems are high-precision motion platforms that can be customized to meet your application needs. Taking traditional 3D printing to the next level, our machines offer traditional manufacturing options (material agnostic dispensing/milling/drilling/polishing), pick and place, up to 1.5m x1.5m area, +- 1.5 μm accuracy, 4/5/6 axis functionality, conformal printing capabilities, digital control, high speed, automatic tool changes and extreme multi curved surfaces. nScrypt enables the user to go directly from CAD file to a fully functioning product, complete with electronics, without manual tool changes. nScrypt’s headquarters are in Orlando, Florida
