Ai Build, SaaS company developing AI-based software for additive manufacturing, announces the introduction of  “Talk to AiSync” – NLP for additive manufacturing.

This NLP or Natural Language Processing system will be able to operate similar to Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) giving a 3D printer slicing instructions.

This model is currently in its beta testing stage with selected partners and will only be released once the testing and validation has completed.

What is NLP and GPT?

Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a branch of artificial intelligence (AI) that studies the interactions between computers and human languages. It entails the processing and analysis of natural language text and speech using techniques such as machine learning, deep learning, and linguistics.

GPT is an abbreviation for “Generative Pre-trained Transformer.” OpenAI created a language model that uses deep learning techniques to generate human-like text. GPT is trained on a large text dataset and can be fine-tuned for a variety of natural language processing tasks such as translation, summarization, and question answering.

GPT is a language model that is used for natural language processing (NLP). GPT generates human-like text using deep learning techniques, specifically a transformer architecture. It is trained on a large text dataset and can be tuned for a variety of NLP tasks such as language translation, summarization, and question answering.

In the case of Talk to AiSync, the NLP for Additive Manufacturing, the user input will be translated into commands or more specifically actions that the software can undertake to deliver results as expected by the user without the express need to delve much deeper into the software, tweak individual parameters and also to reduce the time spent on these tasks.

According to Daghan, this is not a replacement for designers or engineers, and the human is still very much in the loop for decision-making. It is, however, a new kind of natural language interface that elevates the user experience.

“We are working with the industry leaders to establish the boundaries (if any) of this breakthrough development in additive manufacturing workflow automation. The underlying technology is the combination of Ai Build’s visual toolpath programming engine and OpenAI’s large language model GPT, fed with years of real-world manufacturing data from our AiLab in London.”
– Daghan Cam, Co-Founder and CEO, Ai Build

As shown in the introductory video, a user can use technical prompts to optimise the model and prepare it for 3D printing. Some of the prompts can be, “Slice bunny.obj with 10mm layer height”, filter first 5 layers and make solid” and others.

“Talk to AiSync” is expected to significantly lower the barriers to mainstream AM adoption. Anyone who can type or say “Print my part” will be able to successfully print their part without the guesswork and trial and error. This impact is measured by Ai Build using a First-Time-Right (FTR) ratio.

The other anticipated impact of Ai Build’s GPT is that it will empower designers and engineering teams to optimise production at ‘superhuman levels at lightning speed’. Teams will now be able to concentrate on developing complex multi-objective engineering intents and producing better products without the constraints of difficult-to-master graphical software interfaces.

This impact is measured by Ai Build as the average Design-To-Production-Time spent in front of the computer preparing fabrication files.

As intriguing and exciting as this new development is, one can only speculate on the future impact of artificial intelligence on 3D printing and manufacturing in general.
