Additive Manufacturing – a cornerstone in supply chain and manufacturing resilience

AM is a rapidly-growing industry with a global market size forecast to reach US$51 billion by 2030 – with a 15% Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) – or over four times the US$12 billion market size in 20201. AM, or commonly referred to as 3D Printing, is a digital fabrication technology that can add resilience to traditional global manufacturing supply chain models, enabling on-demand distributed digital manufacturing of products, and direct to consumer business models.

In Singapore, manufacturing is a key pillar of the economy contributing over 20% of GDP and accounting for 12.5% of total employment in 2020. Singapore is widely known as an innovation hub and is currently the world’s sixth leading international additive manufacturing hub2. Since the establishment of NAMIC in 2015, the AM ecosystem in Singapore has grown significantly with more than 170 companies across the AM value chain today. Worldwide, 30% of global AM companies have chosen to set up operations in Singapore. These include ThyssenKrupp, Molyworks, EOS GmBH, DMG-Mori, NTopology, and Hyperganic GmBH.

To date, NAMIC has facilitated close to 260 industry projects, and supported 88 startups resulting in approximately 300 new jobs3. Singapore’s Research, Innovation and Enterprise 2025 (RIE 2025) plan will continue to support the manufacturing sector through a wider adoption of technologies including AM, aligned with Singapore’s vision to be a leading manufacturing hub and a global Asian node for technology, innovation and enterprise.

Digital innovation takes centrestage at GAMS 2021 with new industry initiatives

Into its second year of running a virtual summit, GAMS 2021 presents an enhanced viewer experience with the launch of NAMIC.TV, broadcasting the Summit live. NAMIC.TV will serve as a one-stop platform for a seamless virtual experience to engage the global AM Community, with on-demand AM content and access to past webinars.

GAMS 2021 also debuts two new segments, Industry Spotlight and AM Career Talks to further encourage growth in the AM industry. The Industry Spotlight features leading AM companies Cetim-Matcor, Hexagon, TRUMPF, and TÜV SÜD, which will share how companies can start and accelerate their AM adoption journey.

To better serve company needs and grow the talent pipeline, GAMS 2021 will also launch AM Career Talks, a two-part vidcast curated to complement NAMIC’s job portal AM Careers@SG. The vidcasts discuss trends and employment opportunities in Singapore’s AM industry, with insights from leading employers MolyWorks Materials and Hyperganic, global recruitment partner Alexander Daniels Global, together with perspectives from talents who recently started their AM careers.

3. NAMIC (2021)

“NAMIC’s flagship event, the Global Additive Manufacturing Summit, remains a leading platform for the world’s innovative and entrepreneurial minds to connect, convene and exchange ideas on the latest additive manufacturing innovations and applications. GAMS 2021 marks our 10th edition and we are heartened by the strong show of support from the international AM industry, with robust discussions on the implications of AM on start-up investments and the global supply chain, as well as emerging applications and generating significant social impact. We look forward to continuing this global engagement with our new online platform for on-demand content at NAMIC.TV” said Dr Ho Chaw Sing, Managing Director, NAMIC.

Reinforcing this vibrant AM industry outlook, German deep-tech company Hyperganic – the latest entrant to the Singapore AM ecosystem – shared its hiring and expansion plans at the AM Career Talks. Ms Pauline Ruloff, Director of Operations at Hyperganic, shared, “AM shortens the supply chain dramatically. In the future, companies will only require 3D printers, materials, and the applicable software, as compared to the conventional manufacturing
process. Backed by the strong support from NAMIC, Hyperganic chose to set up a base in Singapore for two reasons – the ready talent pipeline and how Singapore actively pursues AM advancement as part of its national strategy.”

Strategic partnerships to advance AM innovation in Singapore

As part of GAMS 2021, three partnerships were signed to advance the adoption of additive manufacturing across the material, maritime and healthcare industries in Singapore.

MolyWorks Materials, a sustainable metal powder manufacturer with a mission to create a circular economy for metal, formed two partnerships as part of their strategic expansion to Singapore. The company earlier set up a new production facility in Singapore to upcycle scrap metals to sustainable additive manufacturing grade powder.

  • Material Innovation: MolyWorks-TÜV SÜD MOU – MolyWorks and leading testing and certification company TÜV SÜD will collaborate to address metal powder carbon footprint and recycled content verification topics to enable a circular economy in additive manufacturing materials.
  • Maritime Innovation: MolyWorks-Bureau Veritas Joint Industry Project – To accelerate AM for the maritime, offshore and marine industry, MolyWorks and leading classification society Bureau Veritas will collaborate on a Joint Industry Project for maritime innovation and pilot trials under the “Innovation, and Centre for Alternative and Renewable Energy” (iCARE) framework. The partnership will identify and promote emerging sustainable business opportunities by tapping into MolyWorks’ metal recycling capabilities and Bureau Veritas’ green services.

On his thoughts about the partnership, Mr Phil Ward, CEO, MolyWorks Materials shared, “MolyWorks is very pleased to partner with TÜV SÜD on quantification and validation of carbon footprint and recycled content for additive manufacturing metal powders. This will enable the creation of materials, parts, and final assemblies which are certified for quality and sustainability. Working together, we will enable the progress of the AM industry towards a low carbon, circular economy and contribute towards Singapore’s sustainability goals in the coming years.”

Mr Holger Lindner, CEO of TÜV SÜD Product Service Division, stated, “We believe that an increased focus on the validated reduction of CO2 footprint and high quality re-cycling of materials will build trust in the benefits of advanced manufacturing. TÜV SÜD’s independent perspective on the safety and quality of processes and products, combined with our neutral assessments of sustainability metrics, will boost the credibility of such advanced manufacturing innovations. The learnings from our partnership with MolyWorks will be shared with the AM ecosystem and regulators to bring additive manufacturing to the next level of being a viable, scalable, and sustainable production method.”

In another strategic partnership for the healthcare and medical sector, the National University Hospital and Johnson & Johnson Singapore launched a 3D Printing Point of Care delivery centre to enhance present-day practice of surgery and advance personalised patient care capability. This collaboration aims to accelerate the adoption of 3D printing in healthcare, improve clinical outcomes with personalised anatomical models and pioneer the development of new surgical techniques.

“This is a significant milestone for Singapore in our journey progressing patient specific solutions in healthcare. Healthcare specialists can now harness 3D printed anatomical models to achieve better clinical outcomes through more effective preoperative planning, patient education and surgery simulation. Building on this, we envision healthcare professionals to harness 3D printed surgical guides and even implants for complex surgeries so as to deliver the best possible outcomes for the patients,” Dr Ho commented.
