KODAK 3D Printing announced the launch of its new Design to Print Service this week. The new service marks an expansion of KODAK’s 3D printing business, from printer and filament supplier to service provider. Over the course of the next year, KODAK 3D Printing will be expanding its AM ecosystem to provide full 360 degree solutions to businesses.

Started by Smart International under license by Kodak, the KODAK 3D Printing ecosystem aims to facilitate the adoption and integration of 3D printing into a range of businesses. The new Design to Print Service offered by the company will give customers access to 3D printing experts to help troubleshoot and support the design to 3D printing process.

“We are extremely pleased to be expanding our services and products within the 3D printing sphere,” said Roberto Gawianski, CEO of Smart International. “We have a robust strategy to target the needs in the marketplace, and our Kodak Design to Print service is the first of our new offerings, with more to be unveiled later this year.”

Through the service, a team of design experts will work with customers to ensure their 3D models are ready to create on a KODAK Portrait 3D printer (first introduced in 2017). Two main services are included: a 3D Designer Service and Print Profile Customization. The first service leverages Kodak’s design expertise to create optimized STL files from any non-printable model.

The second service, Print Profile Customization, involves optimizing the printing parameters for a given model to guarantee a successful result. This step consists of healing the STL file, simplifying it, segmenting or reorienting it and adding supports. Overall, the aim of the service is to reduce print time and maximize print quality through various print parameters. All projects undertaken in the new Design to Print Service are managed directly through the KODAK 3D Cloud.

The Design to Print Service is the first offering Kodak has launched in the 3D printing segment this year, and it promises that more products are on the horizon.
