In one of the first surgeries in UAE including a 3D Printed Implant, a team of specialist doctors utilized 3D printed implants during a 14-hour surgery to remove a substantial tumor and reconstruct an entire jaw. Elreen Ma Lei Ambrocio, a 34-year-old Filipina expat and mother of two, expressed her relief after enduring severe pain, thanking innovative 3D printing technology for a successful outcome.

Elreen, a facility management coordinator in Dubai, had been grappling with lower gum swelling since early pregnancy. Delayed radiological investigations due to pregnancy risks led to a shocking diagnosis a year later—revealing a large tumor spanning her lower jaw.

Consulting a team of experts at NMC Royal Hospital, Dubai Investments Park (DIP), including Dr. Bhushan Jayade, a consultant oral and maxillofacial surgeon, Dr. Ananth Pai, consultant general surgeon, Dr. Vikas Kumar, consultant plastic surgeon, Dr. Adil, plastic surgeon, and Dr. Surjya, anesthesiologist, they collaborated to address Elreen’s complex case.

Dr. Jayade emphasized the challenges and innovative solutions for jaw reconstruction, highlighting the need for both functionality and aesthetics. Leveraging computer-assisted 3D planning and printing technology, the surgical team used Elreen’s CT scan data to create precise excision guides for tumor removal. A 3D-printed titanium plate, mirroring the exact shape of Elreen’s lower jaw, was designed to aid in the reconstruction process, utilizing bone from her left leg.

Dr. Vikas Kumar acknowledged the significant challenge of shaping the bone into a horseshoe resembling the lower jaw, emphasizing the use of the latest clinical innovations and technology.

Post-surgery, Dr. Surjya highlighted Elreen’s swift recovery as she resumed regular activities, expressing satisfaction with the outcome. Elreen, filled with hope and resilience, looked forward to embracing a normal life again.

Hyssop Floria, Elreen’s husband, expressed gratitude for the expertise and compassion displayed by the medical team at NMC Royal Hospital. Dr. Pai concluded by underlining the significance of this case in showcasing the technological advances and world-class treatment facilities available in the UAE, emphasizing their commitment to providing personalized and quality healthcare through innovative 3D printed implants.
