The Indian construction additive manufacturing ecosystem observed two significant events this week. First, a lab dedicated to construction 3D Printing was jointly inaugurated by IIT Madras and Tvasta. Second, the inauguration of a two-story 3D printed house for the army in Ahmedabad was constructed in partnership by Military Engineering Services (MES) and MiCoB Pvt Ltd.

Under the Affordable housing shelter accelerator (ASHA) grant, a dedicated lab for construction additive manufacturing was inaugurated by Prof. Meher Prasad at IIT Madras. The lab is a one-of-a-kind facility in which industry and academia can collaborate to develop the technology.

While at Ahmedabad Cantt, the Indian Army unveiled its first-ever two-story 3D-printed residential housing unit for soldiers. The Military Engineering Services (MES) and MiCoB Pvt Ltd. worked together to build the residence. The foundation, walls, and slabs of the 71 sqm house with a garage space were printed using additive manufacturing, and the construction was finished in 12 weeks.

The Army highlighted construction additive manufacturing: “The method uses a concrete 3D printer that accepts a computerized three-dimensional design and fabricates a three-dimensional structure layer by layer by extruding a unique kind of concrete created just for the job.”

Earlier this month at AMTECH 2022 – India’s largest tradeshow on Additive Manufacturing, a dedicated zone for construction additive manufacturing was curated to provide focussed knowledge to visitors on this technology. In the space, the visitors could interact with specialists and have clarity about the application and its challenges. Additionally, a dedicated 90 min knowledge session by experts from Tvasta, IIT Hyderabad, L&T Construction, Simpliforge and MYK Laticrete provided an in-depth understanding of construction AM.
