Bone Graft 3D, a startup based out of IIT Hyderabad and Prayasta 3D Inventions Pvt. Ltd win the first 3D Printing Startup Challenge.

Additive Manufacturing (AM) is an emerging technology, and startups are the key drivers for its growth and broader adaptation. To foster the development of startups working in Additive Manufacturing, the 3D Printing startup challenge was organized at AMTECH 2022 with active participation from AM Ventures, ASTM International and NCAM (National Centre of Additive Manufacturing) on World 3D Printing Day (3rd December).

The 3D Printing startup challenge began with an open application for startups from across the region to be part of it. Our of the entries received, after careful screening on specific parameters, seven startups were identified for the Live Pitch event at AMTECH 2022. The shortlisted startups were Jajal Medical, Prayasta 3D Inventions Private Limited, MIRA3D, Medoja, 3DK Tech, Mayan and Bone Graft 3D, a startup based out of IIT Hyderabad. The live event the startups were judged on the clarity of their idea and the technical aspects of their idea. The jury for the event consisted of Simon Lee, Regional Director – Asia, AM Ventures, Dr Alex Liu, Head – Advanced Manufacturing APAC, ASTM International, Jaspreet Sidhu, CEO, NCAM, Saurabh Trivedi, Founder, IP Samadhan and Aditya Chandavarkar, Managing Editor, AM Chronicle.

Based on a difficult rating round, Bone Graft 3D, a startup based out of IIT Hyderabad and Prayasta 3D Inventions Pvt. Ltd were declared winners of the first 3D Printing Startup Challenge held in India. The winners received cash prize of Euro 2000 each and in-kind support from all the partners. The delegates
at the AMTECH expo also appreciated the event and shared their views with the startup founders.

Bone Graft 3D is conceptualized by Dr. Ramya Bojedla, a Ph.D. A researcher at IIT Hyderabad, Telangana. She presented her innovative solution on “3D printing in Craniomaxillofacial reconstruction”. She proposed a novel biomaterial for bone repair and regeneration, manufactured using Bombyx mori & Antheraea mylitta silk fibroin microfibers reinforced with polycaprolactone. Her solution helps to address trauma cases resulting in head and neck injuries globally.

Prayasta 3D Inventions Private Limited, the other winner of the Challenge is a National award-winning, IP-driven implant-tech company that has developed the world’s first 3D printer for ‘implant-grade’ silicone to personalize all soft tissue implants and prostheses. Prayasta has been granted patents in India and USA, and the same is filed in Europe; additionally, two trademarks have been granted in India. Prayasta helps to overcome the challenge of 3D printing soft tissue implants using medical grade silicon.

Stakeholders of Indian Additive Manufacturing industry appreciated the event as it helped them understand the AM startup ecosystem and their dynamic role in solving various challenges. The event also highlighted the potential of AM startups to serve society and solve a broader range of problems.
