Bringing you up to speed with the week that went by in the world of Additive Manufacturing with the AM Chronicle weekly news update

The round up of last weeks additive manufacturing news includes collaboration between IIT Hyderabad and DRDO; Imaginarium become the first Indian company to be included in HP Digital Manufacturing Network; research on multi-functional soft materials printer by Cambridge University and much more.

IIT Hyderabad and DRDO join hands to set up industry-academia COE to work on advanced technologies including additive manufacturing

DRDO Cell was established in IIT Hyderabad (IITH) in 2020-21, which was working as a satellite Centre for the RIC Chennai (IIT Madras Research park). The then Director of the RIC, Dr Natrajan, took the initiative to contact various Defence Laboratories in and around Hyderabad, collate the problem statements, and share them among IITH faculty members through the then Dean (R&D) Prof Sumohana, IITH, and that’s how the ball started rolling in 2019-20.

Imaginarium becomes the first company in India to join HP digital manufacturing network

Imaginarium, India’s premier advanced design and digital manufacturing services and solutions provider, become the first company in India to be included in the HP Digital Manufacturing Network, as a Multi Jet Fusion Production Professional partner.

Cambridge University researchers have developed multi-functional 3D printer for soft materials – Printer.HM

Cambridge Researchers have developed a hackable and multi-functional 3D printer for soft materials that is affordable and open design. The technology has the potential to unlock further innovation in diverse fields, such as tissue engineering, soft robotics, food, and eco-friendly material processing – aiding the creation of unprecedented designs.

Compact and flexible fiber design ensures efficient focusing and razor-sharp images thanks to 3D printing

An interdisciplinary team of researchers from Korea, Australia, Great Britain, and Germany – with participation of Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology (Leibniz IPHT) – were able for the first time to optimize an optical glass fiber in such a way that light of different wavelengths can be focused extremely precisely.

Principle of an achromatic metafiber used for achromatic focusing and imaging. An achromatic metalens located on top of a 3D-printed hollow tower (used for fiber-beam expansion) was interfaced with a single-mode fiber via 3D laser nanoprinting. Inset: an enlarged 3D nanopillar meta-atom (height: H, length: L, width: W), the height of which offers a large modulation range of group delay. Credit: Nature Communications (2022).
