Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Technical University (MRSPTU), Bathinda’s Department of Mechanical Engineering organized one- week online All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), Training and Learning Academy sponsored ATAL Faculty Development Program (FDP) on “3D Printing and Design”. As many as 40 approved delegates from various institutes all over India attended the FDP.
3D printing uses computer-aided design (CAD) to create three-dimensional objects through a layering method. Sometimes referred to as additive manufacturing, 3D printing involves layering materials, like plastics, composites or bio-materials to create objects that range in shape, size, rigidity and color.
While delivering valedictory speech MRSPTU, Vice Chancellor Prof. Buta Singh Sidhu said that 3D printing or additive manufacturing (AM) technology is considered an essential component of the Industry 4.0 revolution due to its improved capabilities over traditional manufacturing systems, facilitating the shift towards next generation smart factories. He appreciated the efforts of the department for conducting a multi-disciplinary programme.
University Registrar, Dr. Gurinder Pal Singh Brar was guest of honor. Dr. Brar revealed up-to-date research trends and prospects of utilizing additive manufacturing (AM) techniques to manufacture electrical machines. He said the three most established types of 3D printers for plastics parts are stereolithography (SLA), selective laser sintering (SLS), and fused deposition modeling (FDM).
Modern- day machine applications require extraordinary performance parameters such as high power- density, integrated functionalities, and improved thermal, mechanical and electromagnetic properties.
Prof. (Dr.) Lalit Kumar Awasthi, Director, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar National Institute of Technology Jalandhar a renowned academician and researcher addressed the importance of 3D printing in research work. He said that 3D printing technology is a fast-emerging technology. Nowadays, 3D Printing is widely used in the world. He encouraged the participants for research projects in such types of latest topics.
Prominent resource persons Include world renowned academician Dr. Pradeep Kumar Professor IIT Roorkee, Dr. Jinoop A N is presently working as a postdoctoral fellow at Multi-Scale Additive Manufacturing Lab, University and Raja Ramanna from Centre for Advanced Technology (RRCAT), Indore.
The programme was coordinated by Prof. Dr. Balwinder Singh Sidhu, who summarized the objectives of 3D Printing and Design, Metal parts can be manufactured by mainly three routes: subtractive (machining), forming (casting, forging, powder metallurgy), or additive (3D printing, laser sintering).
While presenting vote of thanks, he extended thanks toward Chairman, AICTE and Dr. Mamta Rani Agarwal, Adviser-I, ATAL Academy for financial assistance to conduct this FDP. MRSPTU Management is highly Thankful Col B Vanket, Director FDC AICTE New Delhi.
Mechanical Engineering department head Prof. Jasvir Singh Tiwana led a team comprising Prof. Yadwinder Sharma and Prof Haramritpal Singh and worked hard for the success of the programme.
Dr. Tiwana said that the Department offers B.Tech, M.Tech and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering. He further added that the faculty of the Department is involved in active research in areas such as Thermal Spray Coating, Additive Manufacturing, 3-D Printing, Advanced Manufacturing Processes and many more.
Prof. (Dr.) Ashok Goel, Director, College Development Council and Director Public Relations Harjinder Sidhu also attended the FDP.
